This view is looking downward into the top of the runner (turbine) and the inner diameter you see down in the hole there is a an interference-fit of 0.002 to 0.003 to the shaft. (The shaft had been removed) Notice the aerodynamic curve going downwards. The piece above is the support for the bearings. It's been lifted up and supported out of the way so the millwrights could get in there and loosen the shaft from the turbine wheel hub.

One of many spiral stairs leading to the lower levels where the turbines and machine shop, pumps, and the lower sump are located. Yes, we will go down these stairs! (after grabbing an oxygen monitor and filling out some exciting OSHA paperwork!) Seriously, these spaces are not for anyone to casually enter.

This image shows where electical cables for lighting and tools have been dropped quite a long way down a pipe to the inside of the scroll case of the deactivated unit. The pipe is in fact the same as the cooling water inlet pipe previously shown, and the strainer can be seen on the right.
